With the clients for-ward-thinking approach to the site as a fenceless shared environment comes an opportunity to truly4、 connect this site to the greater fabric of the Chongq-ing city landscape. Along with this open character desired by the client also comes the main challenges for the project from a landscape point of view, as too are generated the main ideas for the landscape design approach EDAW has developed so f5、ar.With no clearly defined boundaries between the residential, the retail and commercial, or the public space, the landscape takes on a truly shared na-ture and extra consideration needed to be taken to ensure user groups were able to utilize the space aimed at their needs, without compromising the 6、enjoyment of other groups within their environments. With the mixed-use nature of the development also came the consideration that time, together with the three dimensions of space, actually plays a major role in the use of the landscape. The project could be seen to be physically divided into three7、 main land-scape types; 1. Mainly commercial with minimal residential usage; 2. Mainly residential with minimal commercial use; and, 3. Shared space designed to cater for residential and commercial usage. Since residents and commercial users occupy the spaces at different times of day with minimal o8、verlap, they are designed to cater for the needs of both. Further to this, with reference to the yin yang diagram, pockets of residential landscape character will occupy the commercial zones and inversely, pock-ets of commercial space will occupy the mainly residential spaces.With the change in elev9、ation across the site being so dramatic, EDAW felt this should become a strong feature of the design. The main opportunity to present this as a feature of the design, is the intrusion of the public parklands to the south of the site into the central commercial zone. The level changes throughout the 10、park will be treated mainly with sloped lawns and garden beds, or in some instances with walls. The aim is the creation of a variety of spaces and places to experience; the major of these being a multi-use court containing basketball rings, a climbing wall, and linemarkings for various court sports.11、 The integration of this, the third phase of work, with phases one and two, is of utmost importance for the success of the project, not only of each phase individually but primarily for the project as a whole. With this in mind, EDAW sees the already designed landscape of these earlier phases needin12、g to be carefully considered within the context of the third phases design. As such, the linear paving along the main shopping axis will be retained and carried through into the third phase. This will ensure continuity and connectivity be-tween the phases. In order to add more color and interest tha13、n in the previ-ous phases ( one problem that seems to be holding the brilliance of these back somewhat) boldly planted mounds emerge out of the ground to form highlights amongst the linear paving pattern.Finally, and most interestingly, EDAW has developed a landscape idea that will further help to b14、ind all the phases together, and will link to the architec-ture and marketing of the development. Minibox, the name of the develop-ment, conjured up images of landscape rooms for us in the initial workshop design period. What these cubes actually became, and how they related to the landscape, was so15、mething that needed careful resolution. These ques-tions were carefully considered and from the answers was developed the idea of the landscape cube as an apartment (a box) is to the development, so is the landscape cube (a box) to the landscape. These cubes could be shifted, folded, unfolded, stret16、ched and affected in various ways to create points of interest within the landscape. Stairs and ramps are provided for both direct and more leisurely access through the park. A multi-use sports court with basketball, soccer nets and a climbing wall is placed to utilize the height difference between the road and the space to its advantage. A st32、rong linear grove of trees is planted directly down the contours with a gap between, focusing and controlling views through the site. A cascading water feature is attached to the building wall to help reduce the impact the extreme change of level has, and to create feature for eyes and ears as peopl33、e travel through the park. A subtle cen-tral water feature cuts down through the park expanding in size around two landscape cubes. These cubes form quiet, contemplative spaces for people to relax. A strong rhythmic pattern binds the whole space together and gives it the feel of a commercial area, while insertions of lawn, planting, trees and landscape rooms help to divide up the space while encouraging circulation in a certain direction.
